The outer layer of the epidermis (lat. stratum corneum) functions as a protective barrier between the body and the environment. This barrier is responsible for retaining skin moisture and protecting it from external stressors such as ultraviolet rays and harmful substances. Stratum corneum consists mainly of cells called corneocytes. Each of these cells is surrounded by a narrow barrier composed primarily of proteins such as loricrine, involucrin, and small proteins rich in proline that are bound by calcium-dependent transglutaminase 1. The resulting surface forms an effective envelope. Additional skin protection is provided by keratin 1 and keratin 10, the two main structural proteins in corneocytes, that provide mechanical strength to stratum corneum. Ensuring the best possible protection is a vital factor in creating and maintaining the best conditions for healthy and soft feeling skin. Leontopodic acid from Edelweiss extracts stimulates the above mentioned key genes and proteins responsible for epidermal protection. Amazing properties of Edelweiss
Edelweiss, scientifically known as Leontopodium alpinum, s a symbol of balance in nature. This elegant and seemingly delicate Alpine plant species is remarkably hardy and resistant to environmental stress – Edelweiss grows at high altitudes, exposed to strong UV radiation and extreme weather conditions.
Extracts derived from Leontopodium alpinum have strong antioxidant properties and can balance oxidative and inflammatory skin processes caused by UV radiation.
